This detailed walkthrough of the CEBible Install process is designed to help you get your CEBible software installed and running properly. For each step, follow the appropriate symbol below for your type of install. You may want to print this page out for reference as you go.

If you have CEBible on CD (including the Boxed CD), follow these symbols.

If you have CEBible on Floppy Disks, follow these symbols.

If you have CEBible from Downloads (Media codes 03100 and later, after 3/10/2000), follow these symbols.

If you have CEBible from Downloads earlier than 3/10/2000 that make floppy disks, follow these symbols.

ALL Follow these steps for all versions of CEBible.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

For CD Installs: Make sure you have your CEBible CD, your CEBible Users' Guide, and your CEBible Key Card.

For Floppy Disk Installs: Make sure you have your CEBible Install Disk, your CEBible Translation Disks (each translation has an Old and New Testament Disk, and English-language translations have a Translation Index Disk), your CEBible Users' Guide, and your CEBible Key Card.

For Downloadable Installs: Your downloadable order was sent by email to the email address provided in the order. This email contains URLs of web pages to visit for the downloadable components, a user name and password to access these pages, your CEBible License Number, your CEBible Media Code, your CEBible Program Key, and your Translation Keys. For each URL provided in the email, visit this page, read the instructions on the page, and download all of the files indicated on the page. For example, if you have ordered CEBible with KJV, there will be one link on the page for the install file named something like "CEBible21_Install_09279.exe", one link for the KJV data file named something like "CEBible21_KJV_09279.exe", and one link for the KJV Index file named something like "CEBible21_KJV_Index.exe". (For downloadable orders after 3/10/2000, there will not be a separate file for the index.) You can typically right-click on these links in your browser and do a "Save As...". Note the directory that you save these files in. If you have ordered multiple translations via download, make sure and visit all of the links in the order email.

Once you have downloaded all of the data files, use Explorer to browse to the directory where you have saved the files. Count the number of files you have, and locate an equal number of blank, formatted floppy disks. Please note that you cannot run the CEBible install directly from your hard disk - you must create install floppies. (I have received several impolite emails from customers that were bypassing the instructions and attempting to install this version from their hard disks - this does not work!) Run each downloaded file, and it will prompt you as to how to label the disk. Allow each downloaded file to create its respective floppy disk. You should now have a CEBible Install Disk, your CEBible Translation Disks, and your order email handy.

Once you have downloadad all of the data files, use Explorer to browse to the directory where you have saved the files. Run each one of these files, and each will inform you that it is self-extracting to the CEBible install directory, typically "C:\Program Files\CEBible21Install". Make sure you have downloaded and run each file as indicated in your order email, so you will have all of your translations available.

ALL For CD, Floppy, and Download orders, you will also need your HPC or PPC, your synchronization cable for connection to your desktop PC, and the Windows CE Services CD that came with your HPC or PPC. Before installing CEBible, Windows CE Services must be installed and working. If you have not already done this, see the manuals that came with your machine for instructions. It is a good idea to connect your machine at this time, open Windows CE Services, and synchronize or browse your machine to make sure the interface is working. You may also want to back up your machine at this time.

Step 2: Determine Your System Information

ALL You will need to know certain things about your machine as you install software to it.

  • Processor Type: Windows CE machines typically have one of three processor types: SH3 (or SH4), MIPS, and ARM (StrongARM). Find this in Settings->System or Control Panel->System on your HPC or PPC.
  • Windows CE Version: This gets a little confusing, but there are currently three major versions - 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 (which is also called 2.10, 2.11, 2.12, or HPC Pro). Find this in Settings->System or Control Panel->System on your HPC or PPC.
  • Storage Card and Path: Does your machine have a Flash Card or Storage Card, and what is the path to that card? On CE v1.0 machines, the path to this card was named "\PC Card", and on CE v2.0 and up the path to this card is typically named "\Storage Card". However, some machines have the capability to support 2 or more cards, including ROM upgrades, so your card could be at "\Storage Card1" or "\Storage Card2". If you have any doubts, browse your machine using Windows CE Services and verify the proper path.
  • Available Memory: CEBible with one translation and its index file requires about 4.5M (4500KB) of memory. If you are planning to store CEBible in main memory (a path like "\Program Files\CEBible"), you must verify that you have enough storage memory available. Check these settings in Settings->System->Memory or Control Panel->System->Memory on your HPC or PPC to make sure that total Storage memory minus in use Storage memory is at least 4500KB. If not, adjust your memory slider to make this much memory available. If you are installing to a Storage Card, you will only need about 200K of Storage Memory available (for the help files).
Step 3: Start the CEBible Install

Place your CEBible CD into your CD-ROM drive. If you have autorun for CDs enabled, the CEBible welcome pages will load. These are a set of web pages with a simple browser that will give you information on CEBible and the Study Pages and let you install CEBible. To begin the install, click the link for "Installing CEBible", and then click the button for "Install CEBible 2.1". The CEBible Setup program will run.

Place your CEBible Install disk in your A: drive. From Explorer or the "Run.." dialog in Windows, run A:Setup.exe. The CEBible Setup program will run.

The latest CEBible installs create a "CEBible" Start Menu group with a "CE Install" option. Click on this to begin the installation. If you have an older install, use Explorer to browse to the CEBible install directory, typically "C:\Program Files\CEBible21Install", and run "Setup.exe" from that directory. The CEBible Setup program will run.

ALL You will see the welcome screen at this point. Tap "Next" to continue. The next screen is the License Agreement. Tap "I Agree" to continue.

Step 4: Select the Install Type and Version

ALL You will then see options for the type of install you wish to perform:

  • Install CEBible v2.1 and one Bible translation - This is the option you will use when first installing CEBible. It will install the program files and your first Bible translation.
  • Install another Bible translation - When the CEBible program files and your first translation have already been installed, use this option for adding another translation to your CEBible installation.
  • Install CEBible v2.1 program files and help files only - This option is typically used for program updates. If you are upgrading from v1.0 or v2.0, it is best to perform a complete uninstall as indicated by this dialog so all files are updated properly. If you are "patching" a v2.1 install with a newer version, you do not need to uninstall - just install over the existing files. Note that if you do the uninstall, you will probably have to reinstall the translation files.
ALL Select the appropriate option here and tap "Next" to continue. The next dialog lets you select the version of CEBible appropriate for your machine. You determined the processor and version of Windows CE in Step 2 above, so select the proper option here and tap "Next" to continue.

Step 5: CEBible Program Key if Installing Program Files

ALL If you are installing program files (first and third options from Step 4 above), the CEBible Setup program will prompt you for your CEBible Program Key. (If you are just installing another translation, the CEBible Setup program will skip this step.)

This key is printed on your CEBible Key Card. Enter it exactly as it is printed and tap OK.

This key is in your order email next to "CEBible Program Key". Enter it exactly as indicated and tap OK.

Step 6. Selecting a Translation

ALL If you are installing translation files (first and second options from Step 4 above), the CEBible Setup program will now determine what translation you want to install. (If you are just installing program and help files, the CEBible Setup program will skip this step.)

The CEBible Setup program will present a list of translations. Select the translation you wish to install, and tap Next to continue. If you wish to install a translation that you have on floppy disk, tap the "Have Disk" button and follow the instructions below for installing a floppy disk translation.

The CEBible Setup program will prompt you to insert a translation disk. Determine which translation you would like to install first, and insert the "Old and New Testament" disk in your "A:" drive. Tap OK to continue. The CEBible Setup program will determine what translation you have inserted.

Step 7: Provide the Translation Key

ALL Depending on the translation you have elected to install, the CEBible program may prompt you for a translation key. This dialog will be similar to the dialog shown in Step 5 above but will be asking for a key specific to the translation selected. "Public-domain" translations in CD and Floppy installs do not require keys and the CEBible program will skip this step for those translations.

This key is printed on your CEBible Key Card. Enter it exactly as it is printed and tap OK. Make sure you enter the key for the translation you have selected.

This key is in your order email. Enter it exactly as indicated and tap OK. Make sure you enter the key for the translation you have selected.

Step 8: Index File

The CD and newest download installs will automatically determine if an index file exists for this translation and load it if it does exist.

For Floppy and Download installs, the CEBible Setup program will ask if there is an index disk for this translation. If there is, tap Yes, remove the translation disk, insert the index disk, and tap OK to continue. The CEBible Setup program will load the index file.

Step 9: Choose Settings

ALL You must now choose settings appropriate for your install. If you are not installing either the program files or a translation, some of the settings in this dialog will be greyed out. You must select the path on your HPC or PPC where the CEBible files will be installed. If you have determined from Step 2 above that you are installing to main memory (Storage memory), you can leave the path as-is. Otherwise, enter the proper path to your storage card as determined in Step 2 above. If you are installing translations, select appropriate options (everything is selected by default). If you have an international language version of Windows CE and your "My Documents" folder is not spelled "My Documents", check the box for "Non-standard My Documents Folder" and enter the exact spelling in the box next to that setting. If you are installing a translation that requires a font (Greek, Hebrew, Russian, etc.) for the first time, make sure this box is checked - if for some reason you have to reinstall this translation, you may need to uncheck this box as copying over files in your "\Windows\Fonts" directory may fail. Once all options are selected, tap "Next" to continue.

Step 10: Install!

ALL At this point, CEBible is ready to install to your machine. Shut down all running applications on your machine, dock it, and wait for it to synchronize. You can now tap "Next" to begin the installation. If you are reinstalling version 2.1, the CEBible Setup program may indicate to you that you should uninstall - this is not necessary, just enter "Yes" when the CEBible Setup asks if it is OK to overwrite a file. Depending on the speed of your connection, the install can take up to 20-30 minutes to complete.

Step 11: Success!

ALL Once the CEBible Setup program has completed loading files to your machine, it will indicate success and ask if you want to install another translation. If you do, select Yes and the CEBible Setup program will return to Step 6 above. Otherwise, select No and the CEBible Setup program will finish. If for some reason the CEBible Setup program fails, email with the following information:

  • What information did you determine in Step 2 above?
  • What option did you select in Step 4 above?
  • What settings did you choose in Step 9 above?
  • At what Step in this process did your install fail?
  • When it failed, what dialogs and messages were displayed?
With this information, we will be able to diagnose your problem and get you installed properly.
